Group classes are great for adding a social element into your exercise regime. Classes are small, with no more than 12 in a class (more often this is 8-10 maximum). Each group mat work class is 50 minutes long and you will be guided through a variety of Pilates exercises in a number of positions. This group setting benefits you by allowing plenty of space for you to move, and more individual attention and correction as you learn to perfect the Pilates exercises.

Helen can adapt the lesson to suit individuals who may have a specific mobility need, or coming back from injury.

In this class you are taught the foundations of the Pilates principles which underpin the exercises. Relaxation, alignment, breathing, centring, coordination, flowing movements and stamina are the principles that will help deepen your knowledge of Pilates. Building good technique from the outset will help to support your back and strengthen your body. If you are new to Pilates or coming back from injury, this class is for you.

Now you have a good understanding of the principles of Pilates, Progressive Pilates is an opportunity to enhance your learning. You will be challenged to deepen your focus on dynamic alignment. You are invited to further strengthen and stretch while maintaining a connection with your mind and body throughout.

High Intensity Power (HIP) Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a high intensity workout. HIP Pilates can be performed on the mat in a group class, or on the reformer as part of an individual session.

Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout. All you need is a mat (or reformer) and a light pair of hand weights.

The Reformer is probably the most famous piece of Pilates equipment. It is a frame with a moveable carriage that is attached to springs and ropes which are used by the arms or the legs. Using the Reformer helps to improve strength, mobility and balance. Most exercises involve pushing or pulling the carriage against the spring resistance and controlling the return back or holding it in place. You can exercise on this equipment in a number of positions including sitting, lying down, kneeling and standing.

The Reformer is an amazing piece of equipment to use, and the benefits of Pilates will be felt even faster than on the mat. Pilates on the Reformer is perfect for those who are rehabilitating from injury, have a specific training need or simply would like to experience the equipment, and take more of a challenge after learning the foundation principles of Pilates.

These sessions are held at Northallerton Osteopaths, Hale House, 62 Thirsk Road, Northallerton, DL6 1PL.

To book an individual Pilates session please contact Northallerton Osteopathic Clinic reception on 01609 783600 where payment will be taken on booking and a medical form will be sent to you by email.

Individual sessions are tailored to suit your individual needs and goals. Some reasons you may find Individual sessions suit your needs include;

  • You may be completely new to exercise, and group classes can feel daunting. This is a good first step as you can build your confidence and then join a group setting if you choose to.
  • You may have a specific medical condition, for example if you are rehabilitating from an Operation and need gentle movement.
  • You may be pregnant and need to release back ache and have some relaxing movement. Keeping mobile during pregnancy is one of the best things you can do for yourself. You will have more energy when the time comes to birth your baby and you will find you recover more quickly.
  • Post Natal sessions can help you to return to fitness in a safe way. You will learn gentle exercises for your body to heal from the inside. Form new functional movement habits at a time when you most need it (car seats, buggies, bending down to the cot, along with carrying your baby).
  • You may prefer individual attention to focus on your specific training goal.

Sessions can be taken at your own pace and spread out to suit your schedule.

They can be taken on the mat, reformer or both. It is strongly recommended to have a base knowledge of Pilates before getting on to the reformer.

These sessions are held at Northallerton Osteopaths, Hale House, 62 Thirsk Road, Northallerton, DL6 1PL.
